Masonic Services will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2011, here at the funeral home, followed by a Shrine Walk through.
Biographical Information: Merle was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Grigsby. His mother went blind shortly after birth and never saw her son. He was raised by his grandmother in Palestine, Ohio. Merle was a Staff Sergeant for the United States Army, serving during WWII in the Pacific for the 741st Engineers. Every year since 1945, Merle and his Army buddies and their families would get together on Labor Day and as of this last year there were only five (5) of them left from the 741st Engineers. Upon his return to the states he spent several years as the manager of the Welfare Finance in Monticello, Indiana and as their bank examiner until he retired. Since his first retirement he has retired three more times from other endeavors. In 1976 he participated in the United States Bi-Centennial Celebration in a wagon train entourage to Valley Forge. In December of 2000, as a member of the Mizpah Shrine Club Horse Patrol Unit, he rode in the 2001 Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California. Merle was an active member of the Monticello United Methodist Church. He was also a sixty (60) plus year member of the former Burnettsville Masonic Lodge of Burnettsville, Indiana, and Royal Center Masonic Lodge #585 F. & A.M. of Royal Center, Indiana. His connection and association with free masonry, as a Past Master and a sixty year member, brought great interest and great enjoyment. In his waning years Mr. Grigsby compiled a book, depicting the extraordinary events in the lifetime of a very ordinary gentleman. Merle had also received the Sagamore of the Walbash from Govoner Robert Orr. ***Masonic Services by the Royal Center Lodge #585 F.& A.M. of Royal Center, Indiana, will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2011, at the Miller - Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello, Indiana, A Shrine Walk through will follow the Masonic Services. Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery following the service at the church by the Monticello American Legion, AmVets, and VFW Post Honor Guard.***
Special Services: Full Military Rites will be conducted at the cemetery with the Honor Guard of the Monticello American Legion, Amvet, and VFW posts.
Memorial Information: May be given to the Monticello United Methodist Church "Soup for the Soul". Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the church.
Marriage Information: On November 23, 1941 he married the very pretty Mary Ellen Steininger in Louisville, Kentucky. She died on April 1, 1994.
