Biographical Information: Laverne P. "Tom" McAleer, 89, of Monticello, passed away at 1:21 a.m., Sunday, September 20, 2020, at the Indiana University Health White Memorial Hospital Emergency Room of Monticello. He was born on Saturday, May 30, 1931, in Lee (Rensselaer) to the late Thomas and L. Pearl (Johnson) McAleer. On July 18, 1954, in Rensselaer he married Elizabeth A. “Betty” Todd; she passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2006. Tom was a 1949 graduate of Rensselaer Central High School of Rensselaer. He and his late wife, Betty, moved to Monticello in 1966 so Tom could work as an engineer for NIPSCO (Northern Indiana Public Service Company). Tom was a White County 4-H Horse and Pony Club Leader in the 1960’s and early 1970’s and was also an Electric Project Leader for several years as well. He was instrumental in the formation of the White County Horse and Pony Club. Tom devoted a lot of his own time and money and built the first permanent horse arena at the White County Fair Grounds in Reynolds. He lived for his daughter, granddaughters, great grandkids, and his horses. Tom was a well-respected owner and breeder of Foundation Quarter Horses. Standing many stallions, including his favorite Doc Woods. He operated his horse operation for over fifty years. Tom was an avid hunter and raised German Shorthair Pointers and Beagles. Surviving are his daughter, Melinda (husband Robert “Bob”) Han of Monticello; two granddaughters, Amanda “Mandy” (husband Dan) Felker, and Alissa (husband Brian) Creighton, both of Monticello; great granddaughter, Morgan Felker of Monticello; two great grandsons, Brady, and Kieran Creighton of Monticello; and the son they never had, Geordy Reed of Lake Village. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and L. Pearl (Johnson) McAleer’ wife, Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Todd) McAleer; four siblings, Evelyn Shindlar, Marvous Kellogg, William McAleer, and Carol Warran. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at the Miller – Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello. Celebration of Life Service will be at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2020, with Rev. Chris Dodson of the Monticello Christian Church of Monticello officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at the Memory Gardens of Rensselaer of Rensselaer. Memorials may be given to the White County 4-H Ag Association.
