Visitation will be: 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, September 27, 2019, at the Miller - Roscka Funeral Home of Monticello, Indiana, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday, September 28, 2019
Biographical Information: Bert was born and raised in the Monticello, Indiana, area and started school in Sitka (rural Monticello), Indiana. He was a 1941 graduate of Buffalo High School of Buffalo, Indiana. Bert entered the United States Marine Corp in May of 1942 and saw action in Guadalcanal, hit the beach at Guam and Iwo Jima. Bert received a Bronze Star for action in Iwo Jima. He had worked at the former ALCOA in Lafayette, Indiana, and the former Bryan Manufacturing of Monticello, Indiana. Bert then went to work at the White County Soil Conservation Service and had worked there for over twenty - five years. While working for the White County Soil Conservation he designed and engineered many tile systems, farm ponds, open ditches, and erosion control structures. Bert was a member of the First Baptist Church of Monticello, Indiana, taught Sunday School for over thirty - five years, and had also served as a Deacon. Bert was a Director on the Pulaski White Rural Telephone Board, and had served two terms on the Board of School Trustees for the North White School Corporation of Monon, Indiana. He had also volunteered for ten years at the Habitat for Humanity in Sebring, Florida, during retirement. Bert was the kindest, most caring and PROUD United States Marine Corp Veteran and served his country well!!!!
Special Services: Full Military Rites by the Monticello Veterans Honor Guard of Monticello, Indiana, will be conducted at the Hughes Cemetery in rural Monticello, Indiana.
Memorial Information: In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be given to First Baptist Church of Monticello, Indiana. Envelopes will be avaialbe here at the funeral home.
Marriage Information: On April 13, 1946, at the old Zion Bethel Church in rural Monticello, Indiana, he married the love of his life, Imogene Bowsher; she survives. They were married for seventy - three years!!!!
