Biographical Information: Jackie Herald Meents, age 84, of Monticello, Indiana, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, August 6, 2018, at 9:30 a.m.. Born in rural Monticello, Indiana, on Friday, December 15, 1933, he was the son of Gerald and Elsie Meents. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Doris, brother Gerald Jr. “Red” Meents, sister-in-law Margie Meents, sister Mary (Swartz), brothers-in-law Kenny Swartz, and Frank Duncan, niece Melissa Sue Meents, and nephew David Lee Crane. After graduation from high school, he married Doris Rieken on August 16, 1953. They had been “sweethearts” since 6th grade. Doris passed away October 1, 2012. Jack served 8 years in the Army National Guard. He gave the majority of his working career to Nipsco as a gas service man. He retired in 1992 having completed 39 years. He also farmed most of his life. Jack had been in failing health for the past couple of years before moving to SC to be with his daughters. Jack enjoyed working in his yard. He loved sharing time with friends and family and was eager to help in any way. He was very loving and kind, and enjoyed having conversations and telling stories. Jack will be remembered for ALWAYS being available to share a hug and give unconditional love. As a lifetime member of Monticello Christian Church, he was chairperson and/or active on numerous committees. He also served as deacon for many years. He was always giving out hugs. Children always knew he had a supply of candy in his suit jacket just waiting for them. His memory will be cherished by his two daughters, Doreen (Steve) Erb, and Donna (Phil) Diener of South Carolina, 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, a sister Shirley (Jerry) Dahlenburg of Monticello, and sister Barb Duncan, of Whitestown. Visitation will be on Saturday, August 11th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., and at Miller Roscka Funeral Home and from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 12, 2018, at the Monticello Christian Church, both of Monticello. A celebration of Jack’s life will also be held on Sunday, August 12 at 2:00 at Monticello Christian Church in Monticello with Rev. Chris Dodson of the Monticello Christian Church of Monticello officiating. Burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Riverview Cemetery in East Monticello. Memorials may be made to Monticello Christian Church or the Monticello Food Pantry.

Marriage Information: On August 16, 1953, in Monticello, Indiana, Jack married his 6th grade sweetheart, Doris Marie Rieken; she passed away on Monday, October 1, 2012.
